Launch of the New Edition of the European Atlas of Fertility Treatment Policies

Today, the National Infertility Support and information Group (NISIG) has welcomed the launch of the new European Atlas of Fertility Treatment Policies, a joint project by Fertility Europe and the European Parliamentary Forum for Sexual and Reproductive Rights (EPF),

Today marks the unveiling of the latest atlas edition in the European Parliament, during the launch event hosted by MEP Merja Kyllönen (The Left, Finland) and Joanna Scheuring-Wielgus (S&D, Poland). This landmark publication evaluates and compares fertility treatment policies across Europe, serving as a key resource for policymakers in advancing reproductive rights and access to fertility care.

Commenting on the new Atlas of Fertility Treatment Policy, NISIG Chairperson Caitríona Fitzpatrick said; “The work being undertaken around fertility treatment policy is invaluable, as it gives us a true sense of where Ireland lies in comparison to our Europe colleagues. It was a significant wake up call when in 2021, the Atlas of Fertility Treatment Policy showed Ireland to be one of the least progressive nations, ranking 40th out of 43 countries at the time.

Today we are delighted to see that Ireland’s ranking has hugely improved number 12 due to progress around legislation and the beginning of the roll out of public funding for IVF treatment. However, we still have much more do to, and we will now be looking to the new government to ensure that we continue this momentum as there is a lot of work and ground to be made up in this area”, she concluded.

The 2024 Atlas spotlights significant progress in Ireland and Poland since the previous edition of 2021, showcasing how targeted policy changes and advocacy can improve access to fertility treatments for individuals and couples facing infertility challenges.

This Atlas serves as a call to action for European countries to improve their fertility care frameworks, ensuring equitable and timely access to treatments for all citizens. It evaluates the accessibility, affordability, and quality of care, while also highlighting best practices and gaps that demand urgent attention.

Ireland is represented at the event today by MEP Billy Kelleher.
